Food waste became a public issue during the pandemic with long lines at food banks, leading to a class on food waste at the University of Mary Washington. Students and their professor met regularly to discuss the environmental, economic, and social impacts of food waste.
Students visited the Fredericksburg Food Co-op weekly to conduct food audits and identify items that could be saved from being thrown out.
We developed our initial food audits into projects aimed at upcycling, dynamic pricing, composting, and research related to food waste.

Dr. Kashef Majid is an expert in sustainable business practices and consumer behavior, bridging the gap between academic insight and real-world impact. As a Professor of Marketing, he believes reducing food waste enhances corporate profitability and environmental stewardship. He founded Food Waste Solutions LLC to apply his expertise in practical waste-reduction strategies for various sectors.
Dr. Majid is involved in community sustainability initiatives, managing a $432,000 composting grant from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality to divert organic waste from landfills.
Whether designing pricing strategies for grocery chains or optimizing waste compliance for universities, he adopts an agile, implementation-focused approach, believing sustainability promotes operational efficiency and financial savings.
Dr. Majid received his Ph.D. from George Washington University and also has degrees from Concordia University (Montreal) and the University of Ottawa.
